What to Feed the Cats Who Own Us
Many of us who love and care for cats are on disability, struggling with our own chronic health problems, out of work, or have other difficulties. We can’t all do the ideal thing as far as feeding our cats, but it’s surely better to feed our cats what we can than to have to turn them over to already overcrowded shelters and possible euthanization. We all want to do the very best we can, with what resources we have. How on earth do you do that? Here are some ideas about ways you can decide for yourself what works for both you and your cats.*

Choose the Best Food You Can
Methods for choosing the safest and healthiest Choose the one that’s closest to ideal cat feeding that you can afford to considering your personal situation.
- Do not feed your cat anything with grains at all.
OR - Do not feed your cat anything with processed grain glutens or proteins.
OR - Feed your cat only foods with organic US-sourced grains, processed glutens and/or proteins.
OR - Feed your cat only foods with US-sourced grains or processed glutens/proteins. (See Pet Food Tracker for help finding out which those are.)
See the Cat Blogosphere "No Glutens / No Grains" List for information on cat foods that might fit the bill for your choice.
This list can also be helpful if you have a cat with a sensitive tummy, like I do. Two of The Hotties had severe vomiting trouble that the vet couldn’t find a way to control until I switched them to no corn/no wheat foods because of the 2007 cat food recalls scaring me out of my wits. After a couple of weeks, both of the sensitive Hotties got over their vomiting and it’s never come back with these no corn and no grains foods.
Stay Informed About Recalled or Suspect Cat Foods
Keep up with the pet food recall and safer foods news as it becomes available.
Easy ways to do that:
- Visit the Cat Blogosphere blog daily for cat-centric food news
AND/OR - Visit another pet oriented group’s blog or page daily, such as Itchmo.com, PetSitUSA, Pet Connection, Pet Food Tracker, and Itchmo for daily updates.
Remember, we bloggers were ahead of the FDA and the ASPCA in gathering news and getting it out there in the 2007 pet food recalls. We’ve proven it. So don’t wait for them to tell you when something may not be safe.
Learn About Ideal Cat Feeding
While some of us may not be able, for various reasons, to stick to the ideal, it’s helpful to learn about it so we can find ways to get as close to it as possible. For a quick overview, see Itchmo.com’s article about what you should feed your cat. For more in depth information, see CatInfo.org and HolistiCat.
Have suggestions? I would love to hear them. Send ‘em on!
Many Blessings to all the kitties!

*Because most of the cats around the Cat Blogosphere group affected by the 2007 recalls were in the US, and I am in the US, the ideas here are biased towards ways to take the best care of cats in the US. I would love for someone in Canada or other countries to help with getting the same level (or better!) going for cats in their country.
