Dear Cat Lovers, I manage the oldest feral cat colonies in Swakopmund, Namibia. Their origins can be traced back to the original feral cat colonies in the Cape Town Harbour. Thirty of their cats were shipped to Swakopmund to help the people of the town with the devastating rat problem they found themselves with. That was in 1897, 110 years ago and the descendants of these cats are still living here. Bad news for rats, who are also still here. I have personally caught 50 of these cats during the last few years and I believe that is something to celebrate. The cats are well cared for and protect us humans from rats. The colonies are now all of a manageable size which in turn enhances the life of each colony member cat.
Colonies will continue to be monitored and managed on a daily basis, because we really care about them and feel that this is the least that we can do for them after the great job that they do for us. Black Cat Friday is the best news ever and thank you all you cat lovers for brining the attention to the plight of the black cat, especially in Sub Saharan Africa where superstition is rife about black cats. Cat hatred is present wherever missionaries of the early pioneering days taught the indigenous people the myths that they had been taught themselves, so the lie about black cats and cats in general is perpetuated.Purrs and meouws from the Swakopmund feral cats. purrrrrrrs.
Kab (website under construction)
PS: I meant to say that I had personally caught 50 cats and had them sterilized at our private veterinary practice and then released successfully back into their home colonies. One of these females is now 14 years old. I had her sterilized 3.5 years ago. Purrrrrs from swk catz
["Black Cat Friday" sounds grrreat, we’ll add that to our list. there be super-stishun about black cats here, but in other countries, like Japan, tha black cat is considered to be furry lucky. we’s at tha Cat Blogosphere sure does fink so. fanks, Kab, fur tha info an we’s looking forward to tha website… Purrss, KC]
