Dry cat food now recalled as melamine new suspect in pet food recall
Mar. 30, 2007

TORONTO (CP) - Hill’s Pet Nutrition has recalled some dry cat food made with the same contaminated wheat gluten that prompted a massive recall of wet dog and cat food.
In a statement Friday, Hill’s Pet Nutrition said its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry sold in Canada and the U.S. included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used. Hill’s, based in Topeka, Kan., said its other products were not affected, and called the recall “precautionary.”
It’s the first dry pet food to be recalled since Menu Foods (TSX:MEW.UN), based in Mississauga, Ont., recalled some 60 million cans and pouches of some 95 brands of “cuts and gravy” style wet food.
Earlier in the day, U.S. officials identified melamine-tainted gluten produced in China and distributed by a lone American company as the likely cause of the massive Menu recall.
About 60 million cans and pouches of wet pet food has been yanked from shelves following the deaths of more than a dozen pets.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
We just bought a new bag of Hill’s Prescription Diet C/D the week before the recalls started.
The bag my babies are finishing up now clearly isn’t a problem (the bag is twice the size they are, if it hasn’t made them the least bit sick in the last 6-8 weeks it won’t) but I don’t CARE if they say only the M/D is affected. I am NOT feeding them anymore of this (insert bad werds here)! The new (unopened) bag is going back!

yeah! our elderly brother, nelson, eats ONLY prescription diet K/D kibble–we figgers if one is boogered up, the possibility of them ALL bein’ toxic is much higher than ordinary. but what the heck does he eat in the meantime?????? he’s gotta have that to keep his fluids peed off and away from his heart!!
we still wanna be part of an organized poop-in on their lawn!!

Thanks for the updates Dragonheart! This is getting furry FURRY scary!! My cousin Smokey gets Science Diet, and mom was planning on switching me too! Now she doesn’t know WHAT to feed me! I’m due for blood tests anyway and mom may have the vet check for toxins too, although right now I’m on Purina. We’re in on the poop-in. I’ll get Smokey. Smokey get Max!!

I don’t know what to feed my group anymore, either. I have been using Purina Cat Chow, since a friend told me it has no dyes in it. Just don’t know who to trust anymore and I feel so guilty even opening a can of wet food for them. Chicken and Beef Baby Food works pretty good.

Guys, my firstest suggestion is, go to the Hill’s web site an see what they suggest.
Second: Purina is voluntarily recallin some food now, too. Go to their website to see.
Third: We eat Wellness, and NONE of their foods haf been recalled cuz none use wheat gluten. Efurryone still says it was the wheat gluten that was bad, so foods wif NO wheat gluten should be FINE.

I eat both prescription hill ID in dry and WD in crunchies. My vet says not to worry, but me and mommy are. Good suggestion Victor, we’re going to Hill’s site now. Jeez, is nothing sacred? Food certainly should be!
I’m in on the poop in but mommy said she won’t be there….

I was doing some looking around today. I think I may switch my monsters to Acana or Orijen which are both made by Champion Petfoods Ltd, a company based in Alberta near me, which guarantees all products their products are made and packed by them.
http://www.championpetfoods.com/
The Orijen has no grain products at all, the Acana does use rice and/or oatmeal, and specifically says ‘good for struvite reduction’
They sell in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick and British Colombia in Canada, adn Florida, Oregon, Washington and Georgia, in the US. Worth a look for any of you in that area.
I can’t recommend either, mind you. I haven’t tried them. But they do look better than most of the crap out there.

Thank you for the important information, Dragonheart. I’m so glad that we have this information available to us through the Cat Blogosphere. We are not so great at following the news on our own.
We do eat Prescription food, but it is the Z/D kind. We’ll have Tracy ask at our vet’s for a recommendation.

Wellness makes yummy dry and canned food and NONE of their foods contain wheat gluten. http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/

I just went to the Hill’s website and read that the M/D food is their only product that contains wheat gluten at all. It is listed clearly on the ingredients list for that food as wheat gluten. Wheat gluten is not listed on the ingredient list for our food.
The M/D food is for weight control, so it makes sense that they use extra fiber ingredients for that food. I feel much better about my food now. I hope that everything will settle down now and all the cats foods will be safe soon.
