ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Rodent poison has been found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, a spokeswoman for the State Department of Agriculture and Markets said Friday.
Spokeswoman Jessica Chittenden would not identify the chemical or its source beyond saying it was a rodent poison. State agriculture officials scheduled a news conference Friday afternoon to release laboratory findings from tests on the pet food conducted this week.
The deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of pet food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. There have been reports of kidney failure, some fatal, in pets that ate the recalled brands. The company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.
Menu Foods last week recalled "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall sparked concern among pet owners across North America. It includes food sold under store brands carried by Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other large retailers, as well as private labels such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

I no longer remember where I saw it, but there are some reports claiming Menu Foods was getting reports of cats & dogs dying from December of last year. This whole mess keeps getting worse and worse.

Thank heavens we eat only organic food recommended by our naturopathic vet!

It’s so horrifying that something like this can happen! We’ve been feeding all our kitties some of the recalled Nutro packets with their homemade food, and are worried sick. We’ve called several vets in our area, and we’re being told that if our babies were poisoned, nothing can be done other than wait & see if they get sick, then give them fluids and make them comfortable until the inevitable, so there’s no reason to test. I’m not sure I accept that. Has anyone else heard different advice from their vet?

Well, I am not a vet, but some of this information is from people who claim to be vet techs. Use your own best judgment.
Here is a little information on the care and treatment of kidney problems.
A few days ago (before the rat killer was identified as the probably cause) Banfield Pet Hospital said that all furrkids “who have eaten a Pet food products from the Menu Foods recall list should be examined by a veterinarian”.
From Iams FAQ
Supposedly, the kitties get sick within 24 hours, so if everyone is still behaving more or less normally, you might be ok. It couldn’t hurt to get your kitties a kidney panel and/or a full on physical anyway.
Not sure any of this is of any help, but I thought it might be of some value.
